A running ad is an observation
An ad that remains visible may be useful to investigate. It does not reveal the advertiser’s margin, objective, budget, attribution or overall result. Longevity alone cannot tell you whether the ad is profitable.
Looking only at ads still running also leaves out discontinued tests. Without that missing history, a comparison can favour survivors without explaining why they survived.
Study the idea, not just the duration
Classify the hook, offer, format, proof and intended audience. Look for recurring approaches and differences between advertisers. The useful outcome is a set of hypotheses about what might resonate, not a league table of presumed winners.
Keep the original reference and observation date. An interpretation becomes easier to challenge when the reviewer can see the ad rather than rely on an automated label.
Turn research into your own test
Ask which customer problem the pattern addresses and whether your brand has credible evidence for a similar promise. Then write a distinct brief using your own assets and proposition.
Evaluate the resulting creative against your own business outcomes. Competitor research can improve the starting question; it cannot supply the answer to your campaign test.
